If a chatbot is an assistant that answers questions, an AI Agent is an assistant that can "take action" on its own. It's one of the most important trends in AI right now.
A chatbot takes a question and answers it. An Agent takes a goal, makes a plan, uses tools, and works through multiple steps until the job is done, such as searching for information, opening websites, filling in forms, summarizing results, and sending you a report.
An Agent uses a language model as its "brain" to decide what to do next, then calls "tools" such as a browser, files, or other programs. It checks the results and moves on to the next step until it reaches the goal. You can follow research in this field at Google DeepMind.
Work will shift from "doing every step yourself" to "designing the work and checking quality." People who know how to use AI will be able to get many times more done.
A shop owner sets the goal: "Every Monday morning, summarize last week's sales, list items running low, and draft three promotional posts." The Agent pulls the data, does the calculations, writes the summary, and drafts the posts. The owner just reviews and picks a favorite. A job that used to take half a morning now takes a few minutes.
Many tools have started offering Agent-style features you can try.
No. Many tools accept instructions in plain language.
AI Agents are the next step beyond chatbots. Start preparing today by using AI in your everyday work, and you'll be ready when it becomes standard in every office.
